Extra tall loft beds
Extra tall loft beds are the lanky cousins of normal loft beds. With plenty of room underneath, tall loft beds create extra space in small bedrooms, studio apartments and home offices by moving the bed high up off the floor. But there is more magic than height in these beds as the extra space they create underneath the loft can be used in a myriad of options creating a whole new realm of possibilities for small living spaces.

Custom Extra Tall Loft Beds
More than any other piece of furniture that we build, our customers ask for custom designed loft beds to fit with with specific room arrangements and ceiling heights. In fact, this author sleeps in a custom Cherry loft bed frame with a built in desk that was custom made for my long legs and special bedroom ceiling height!
What makes tall loft beds special
The magic of extra tall loft beds is in the name: extra tall. This extra height advantage may not seem like a big deal, but it can be a game changer when you consider all the furniture and organization options you can fit underneath the loft. With a little creative thinking, the options of what to fit under an extra tall loft are almost endless.
An extra tall loft bed makes ample space for a built in desk. This is particularly important for people who choose to live in a small apartment or studio. With the work from home trend over the last few years, many people find themselves up using their kitchen tables as their desk. This is not very good because of it's public nature. All types of noises, sounds and disturbances happen on that table, and it is not helpful for productivity.
Putting your desk under your bed also allows you to get creative with your setup. For example, if you use a computer monitor on an arm, then you can mount it to the underside of the bed, and rotate the monitor the right way. The writer of this blog has a loft bed with a full space beneath his desk, and he put a shelf above his. Extra tall loft beds give more clearance for your head and for anything extra that you would want to add.
An extra tall loft bed opens up a wide variety of storage options from cabinets to cubes to drawers to clothes racks - anything that will fit! And with an extra tall loft bed, you can fit some really unexpected and stylish things from filing cabinets to even repurposed school lockers under the bed. And the neat thing is that you can mix and match your design.
And clothes are not the only things you can hang under a loft bed. Hanging storage is often found as a versatile way to store long tall objects like bikes, umbrellas and skis. It is also great for larger bulky objects that are hard to store, like tents.
You can even put a smaller bed under the larger loft bed. This is useful for situations where a lot of people have to live in the same space. Children could sleep under the loft bed in small bunks while the parents sleep in the loft. An older brother can easily sleep in the bigger loft mattress while the younger brother sleeps in the bottom one.
Whatever you decide to buy to put under the bed, you will probably have the space to do it with an extra tall loft bed.
Ceiling Heights
Why are quality loft beds hard to find? Many large furniture companies are unable to make tall loft beds because the customization required to fit the many different ceilings heights that customers request. Mass market furniture factories just cant offer variation required to satisfy customers.
At Solid Custom Heirlooms, after many hundreds of custom loft bed requests, we've come to the conclusion that there simply are not very many good loft bed options on the market that work well in a tall room. Retailers such as Wayfair and Ikea offer loft beds, but don't offer options suited for loft beds for adults, or custom loft height requests.
Our solution is to offer custom made loft beds of all heights, each made to the customer's specific height request. While we do offer standard sizing for a typical 7 or 8 foot tall ceiling, we also offer custom sizing based on our standard designs. Any height can be made to order, perfect for any room. Different mattress sizes are also available, making interesting combinations like king sized loft beds possible.
If you are looking for a loft bed with stairs rather than a ladder, or prefer a custom desk, wardrobe or shelving, a custom bed may be in your future! Making the bed custom ensures that what you want is what you get.
Loft Beds for Adults
Loft beds are an ideal choice for adults because of their functionality. A loft bed can be made with different size mattresses while keeping space on the floor. A really tall person may want to have a really long and big mattress like an Alaskan king, while a smaller adult may want to save space by going with a standard twin. Loft beds will free up space both on the floor and on the mattress.
Modern Loft Bed with Stairs
A great addition to a loft beds is a staircase. Stairs add additional functionality to a tall loft bed because of their height. It is hard to get onto a really tall loft bed with just a ladder. Hoisting yourself up there every night can get tiring, and you might hit your head more than once. A staircase fixes this by having only the roof above your head, giving you one less thing to worry about. More importantly, they are safer. If you slip off a ladder, you have a straight fall to the floor, while with a stair the step below will catch you. Stairs reduce the risk of injury, so if you think that you may fall, then a stair is the best option.

Am I too Heavy for a Loft Bed?
You are definitely not too heavy for a loft bed! While store-bought beds are usually flimsy, high quality custom made loft beds are strong enough for just about anyone. Our typical loft bed has a 300 pound capacity, while many have an 800 pounds or more capacity. Simply put, we can accommodate any size of human. And that is not limited to the standard height. Whether its a 7 foot loft bed or a 9 foot one, a custom made loft bed can be constructed to support any specified weight load.
Extra tall loft beds from Solid Custom Heirlooms
To sum up, extra height goes really well with loft beds. It complements the design's space saving nature by giving more vertical space. So if you have a high ceiling, getting a custom loft bed is of course the best choice.
