Are bunk beds OK for adults? Bunk beds for adults

Bunk beds have come a long way since their humble beginnings as utilitarian space-saving furniture for kids. Today, there are all sorts of fun and stylish bunk bed designs available for both kids and adults. Bunk Beds are growing in popularity for adults in:

  • Vacation Rentals, Airbnb, and VRBOs
  • Cabins, Ski Lodges and Lake houses
  • Guest Rooms and Basements
  • Studio Apartments and Tiny Houses
  • Anywhere where you might need to host and sleep multiple adults
  • But are bunk beds really OK for adults?
  •

What makes a safe and sturdy bunk bed?

High-quality wood adult bunk beds are the most popular type of bunk beds for those looking for an adult-sized sleeping solution. Unfortunately, high quality at many places means pretty generic looks and uninspiring designs.

Many bunk bed frames offer extra features such as stairs, desk space, and additional storage options, ensuring that all your needs are considered when choosing the best bunk bed.

Many larger adult bunk beds also come equipped with sophisticated safety features to ensure that your bed remains safe. Manufacturers use high-quality materials such as solid hardwood, while additional safety rails provide added protection for those who may be sleeping in the top bunk. Furthermore, manufacturers have added firmer mattress support, increased clearance between each bed as well as locking mechanisms to ensure that the bunk bed remains stable and secure.

This combination of safety measures ensures that your bunk beds remain safe, even during the most active of nights.

Can a bunk bed hold two adults?

Yes! Many bunk beds are designed to hold two adults. While the exact weight capacity will vary between models, it is generally accepted that the bottom mattress of most adult-sized bunk bed frames can comfortably support up to 250lbs per bed and depending on the design and mattress size it could be up to 800lbs. If you plan on having multiple people sleep in a bunk bed together, look for one that can withstand a higher weight capacity and make sure to use appropriate mattress sizes.

Can adults sleep on top bunk bed?

Maximum weight for top bunk beds is generally 150-200lbs but depending on the size and bed design can be much higher. For example, if you have a queen bed as the top bed you should look for a rating that is 250lbs or larger to support multiple people.

The most popular bunk bed configurations for adults

An adult bunk bed can be created in almost any combination of mattress size, design and height as long as the top mattress is of the same size or smaller than the bottom.

Bunk beds are typically called by both the top and bottom mattress names, with the top size coming first. For example, a twin over queen will have the twin bed on the top and the queen size bed on the bottom and and a full over full will have 2 full size beds.

Detailed information about mattress sizes can be found in our mattress guide.

Popular adult bunk bed configurations:

  • Full over full - just enough space for kids big and small
  • Twin XL - the classic with just a bit more space
  • Twin over full - good for kids on top and bigger people on the bottom
  • Queen bunk beds for adults - when you need to maximize your sleeping space
  • Loft beds - Quickly create a home office in a small space
  • Trundle beds - a hidden extra bed that's perfect for guests
  • Bunk beds with stairs  - make it easy to get to the top bunk
  •

Full over full bunk bed

Full over full size (also known as double over double) bunk beds are popular for both children and adults because while they are only 16 inches wider than a more standard twin over twin bunk bed, the little bit of extra space creates a lot more comfort and room to sleep! This is a favorite bunk bed for a vacation rental or guest rooms as the extra space is very comfortable and is extra-helpful if multiple adults need to use the bed in a pinch.

Twin XL bunk beds

Twin beds can be a tight fit for an adult! Never fear, the twin XL is here! With 5 extra inches of length but the same width as a regular twin, the twin XL mattress gives just enough additional room for an adult to sleep in comfort.

Twin over full bunk bed

Twin over full bunk beds provide a wealth of sleeping options if multiple people share a bedroom. The twin size top mattress is smaller and will be comfortable for one adult or child, while the lower full-size mattress provides enough space for two people. Many adults also enjoy having the extra room on the lower full size mattress when its time to relax and read a book to the kids at night, or if a child needs help getting to sleep.

Queen bunk beds for adults

Queen bunk beds are a great option for those who need more sleeping space. A queen bed is often used in a vacation rental when more people need to sleep in the same bedroom. The queen-size mattress is larger and more comfortable for multiple people, and the bunk bed frame can take up less floor space than two separate beds.

King bunk beds, in both Eastern and California King sizes are even bigger! A very popular option for a king bed is to add a twin or twin XL or full/double or full XL on the top. Mom and Dad get the nice California King bottom bed while the kids get the top bunk!

Keep in mind that king and queen size bunk beds are much larger than other beds and must be built with rock solid construction to be sturdy enough to support multiple people.

Loft beds for adults

A loft bed is just like an adult bunk bed but removes the lower bed portion with an open space to work, relax or exercise. Loft beds double the functionality of small rooms by raising the bed up and out of the way and freeing up overlooked floor space.

Need to work from home but don't have a dedicated home office? A king or queen loft bed allow two people to sleep comfortable on the top and give you the room you need to create a dedicated workspace below. Depending on the ceiling height of the room, there could even be space for a standing desk.

Loft beds are popular for:

  • Working from home without a home office
  • Urban studio apartments
  • College and other shared housing
  • Tiny houses

Bunk beds with stairs

If you are an adult considering sleeping on the top mattress of a bunk bed or loft bed, consider adding a staircase rather than a ladder to your bed design. While kids find it easy to scamper up a ladder to get to their bunks, older folks often enjoy the safety and convenience of a staircase to get up and down. Built in stairs often also add the option of storage space or a desk to the bed design.

Trundle bunk beds

A trundle bed slides out from underneath the main frame of a bunk (or regular) bed and can be used as an extra bed when needed. It is perfect for sleepovers, hosting family or friends and can even store extra bedding or clothing when not in use. With a trundle bed, you can easily add an extra sleeping space to any bedroom without sacrificing valuable storage or floor space. No matter what type of bed you choose, it is important to consider how much storage it provides as well as the overall comfort and support that it provides to the mattress.

Full over full bunk beds with trundle add a bonus of a slide-out trundle bed for even more sleeping capacity. The trundle is typically a twin or full size.

Family Co-Sleeping : are bunk beds safe?

Many families with small children choose large bunk beds as a way to share a bedroom. But are are bunk beds safe for young children as well as their parents?

Bunk beds can be an excellent fit for children of all ages, but there are certain safety considerations to take into account when considering bunk beds for toddlers.

  • Children under the age of 6 should not sleep in the top bunk
  • Bunk beds should have sturdy guardrails on both sides and top to prevent falls. Guardrails need to extend at least 5 inches above the mattress top, which includes any added mattress pad, to prevent kids from rolling off.
  • Gaps in the guardrails should be 3.5 inches or smaller
  • Ladders need to be secure and easy for your child to climb up and down. Make sure to train your children how to safely use the ladder.

Are bunk beds safe for 4 year olds?

Bunk beds are a good option for 4 year olds as long as they stay on the bottom bunk. Children under the age of 6 should not sleep on the top mattress of a bunk bed.
