Are loft beds OK for adults?
Loft beds and bunk beds are most often associated with children as parents with growing families need to fit multiple kids into small bedrooms. But as the price of housing and living costs escalate, many adults find themselves with a small bedroom space, tiny studio apartment or guest room that could be greatly improved by a loft bed.
After building hundreds of loft beds for people of all ages, we still get more questions about loft beds for adults than any other furniture category. People want to know if loft beds are strong enough for two adults, if a loft bed can include a desk and storage, as well as what features are needed to make a loft bed the right style and fit for an adult.
Full size and Queen size loft beds are the best choice for adults who need a comfortable bed with space underneath for a desk, storage and living space. Not only can adults sleep comfortably in a loft, but many prefer it to a regular bed!
We discuss all aspects of loft beds on our main page, but if you are an adult considering a loft bed, this blog is for you. Let’s dig into what makes a loft bed a great choice for adults.
The best loft beds for adults
Loft beds bring new life to small rooms
A loft bed is similar to a bunk bed, but removes the lower bunk and replaces it with empty space, and in some cases built in furniture. A loft bed doubles the functionality and square footage of a small room by raising the headboard and bed up and out of the way to free up unused and overlooked floor space.
An adult loft bed is a perfect fit for people that need to work from home but don’t have room for a dedicated home office. A king or queen adult loft bed allows two people to sleep comfortably on the upper loft while providing the space to create a dedicated workspace below.
Loft beds are comfortable and strong
Heavy duty loft beds for adults have an upper loft bed weight capacity of 250 to 800 pounds or larger. This is plenty of capacity for two adults and perhaps Fido too. A well built wood loft bed is very sturdy and will not squeak while in use.
Queen size loft beds for adults are our most popular models as they provide plenty of space underneath as well as a very comfortable upper loft. Loft beds can be made in all mattress sizes from a twin bed to king size and beyond. Our mattress size guide provides dimensions for all standard size mattresses.
An often overlooked advantage to a loft bed is that when not in use the bed stays “above the fray” of the bedroom. Adult loft beds can be a neat and tidy escape from a messy bedroom when it comes time to sleep. We have many customers report that they look forward to their nighttime “perch” – that gives an adult an extra sense of security and safety while they sleep.
Modern loft beds for adults
While loft beds might make you think about dorm rooms or summer camp, modern adult loft beds bring a whole new sense of style and contemporary flair to bedroom décor. Modern loft beds can also include stylish and thoughtful features that increase the functionality of both the bed and the space underneath.
Loft beds with desks: A loft bed with desk is a simple yet very functional addition to a bedroom. While the most common use of the desk surface is a home office, many customers also tell us they use the desk as a vanity counter or a TV table.
Loft bed with storage spaces: Along with a desk, shelving, drawers and even wardrobe closet space are a natural fit for the design of a loft bed.
Loft bed with stairs make it easier to get up and down from the bed.
- Walk beside mattress is a feature we developed when our customers asked for more space on the loft platform to get in and out of bed. The walk beside mattress is a platform next to the mattress, 18 to 30 inches wide and the full length of the bed. Not only does it make it easier to get in and out of bed, but helps when its time to make up the bedsheets.
Custom Loft Bed Design Options
When it comes to custom loft beds for adults, the design options are virtually limitless. Whether you prefer a sleek and modern look or a cozy and rustic style, there is a custom loft bed design to suit your taste and complement your existing decor.
One popular design option is a minimalist loft bed that features clean lines and simple shapes. This design is perfect for those who prefer a contemporary aesthetic and want to create a sleek and uncluttered look in their bedroom. With a minimalist loft bed, you can achieve a sense of spaciousness and simplicity, making your room feel larger and more open.
If you prefer a more traditional or rustic look, a custom loft bed made from wood can add warmth and character to your space. This type of loft bed often features intricate details and craftsmanship, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Whether you choose a natural wood finish or opt to add color via a wood stain, a wooden loft bed can be a beautiful focal point in any room.
For those who want to make a bold statement, there are custom loft beds available in a range of vibrant colors and unique designs. These beds can add a pop of personality to your space and become a true conversation piece. Whether you prefer a bold red, a vibrant blue, or a playful pattern, a custom loft bed can reflect your individual style and add a touch of fun to your room.
Loft bed safety
While most bunk and loft bed safety warnings are designed to protect sleeping children, adults should also pay attention to safety when sleeping on a loft.
Make sure your loft bed is rated for 2 sleepers. A queen loft bed should have a minimum weight capacity of 500 pounds or larger.
Loft beds must have a guard rail at least 5 inches higher than from the bed surface. Quality loft and bunk beds have removable guardrails to make changing the bedding easier.
To be safe, a loft bed must have a sturdy ladder or staircase to make sure getting in and out of bed is easy.
- A comfortable loft will have 4 to 6 feet of space between the finished mattress height and bedroom ceiling.
