This unique enclosed box bed is patterned on a historical box bed design originally intended to keep the sleeper warm and protected from cold drafts at night. In modern times people also love enclosed beds because they can be easily "put away" when not in use, keeping the bed clean and organized.

Box beds have a long history in many parts of the world, dating back as far as medieval times. For example, Scottish box beds were used in many house and cottage interiors through the cold and windy Scottish highlands and outer islands. The purpose of a box bed was to keep the sleepers warm, the bedding clean and well as to provide privacy and sometimes a room divider in small one room cottages.

Just like all of our designs, the photos you see here represent a wide range of possibilities and we can work with you to customize this bed to meet your needs. The bed is custom made for you. Contact Us to request almost any change that you would like.

Dimensions

  1. The outside dimensions are 6" wider and 8" longer than a standard sized mattress
  2. Total height is 75"
  3. The bottom of the mattress is 14" from the floor
  4. The Enclosed bed is a platform bed configuration for use without box springs
  5. Doors are located on both long sides of the bed

Build Quality

Our furniture is built to order using time-honored construction methods. We use solid American Hardwood as our primary material - no veneers or compressed particle boards are used. High quality plywood is only used in drawer bottoms, cabinet backs, and some interior support structure where it provides needed dimensional stability.

Our standard finish is un-stained wood finished with Tung Oil. This creates a highly durable and easy to maintain surface that brings out the natural character and unique grain patterns of our hardwoods.

For an added charge stain can be applied prior to the Tung Oil finish. More details can be found at our Finish Options and Stain Choices pages. The cost is shown in the drop down menu above.

Our hardwood is from the forests in the Appalachian region of the United States that have been harvested for hundreds of years. Hardwood is a natural product and has grain and color variations that make each piece of furniture unique. No piece is an exact match with the listing photos. The unique color, grain, and appearance are all part of the one-of-a-kind qualities of your furniture.
