What are the disadvantages of a platform bed?
Platform beds and box springs
Platform beds are growing in popularity both because of their sleek, modern design, and the fact that many new hybrid and other memory foam mattresses require a platform bed base to keep their warranty intact. Most mattress companies appear to consider mattress foundations with a box spring too old fashioned and obsolete, and especially the newer online-only mattress companies suggest that the wooden slats of a platform bed are the best foundation for their mattresses.
But despite their growing popularity, many people choose not to sleep on a platform. In fact, some people even say "I hate platform beds" and far prefer other types of traditional bed frames such as box spring beds.
In light of the wide range of bed foundation choices, this blog will cover the key disadvantages of platform beds and the factors you should be aware of before you make a new bed purchase.

What is the difference between a platform bed and a regular bed?
A platform bed is a bed frame that eliminates the the need for a box spring by replacing it with wooden slats that provide both support and ventilation to the mattress. A platform bed is typically lower profile than a regular bed, but can be built to any height. Without the need for a box spring, many platform bed frames and beds also include under the bed storage drawers, cabinets or open shelving.
Any mattress can go on a platform bed, but check with your mattress manufacturer to make sure it is recommended! While you can use a box spring on a platform bed, it is most likely unnecessary and will add height and unnecessary cost to the overall bed.
Platform bed disadvantages
Platform beds are used without a box spring
If you prefer a box spring and mattress combination, a platform bed is not for you. While a box spring can be used on a platform bed, it is unnecessary. The wood slats of a platform bed provide the same function as your old box spring - giving proper air flow and support to your mattress.
Low platform beds are not for everyone
People like low profile beds because of their modern look, and being low to the ground makes it easy for kids and pets to get up on the bed.
But a low bed is not for everyone! The height of the typical low platform bed mattress is 4 to 16 inches from the floor. Many people will find this too low to get in and out of easily, and a low platform bed is probably not the best bed for an elderly person or someone with back or knee problems.
The ideal height of a bed from the floor
The ideal height of a bed is 22 to 25 inches from the floor. This allows the user to sit comfortably on the edge of the bed, and easily stand up and sit down on the edge of the bed.
Custom platform beds can certainly be built at a higher height, but may not achieve the look that is typically expected from this style of bed.
Platform beds with storage provide extra bedroom storage space and often achieve the ideal mattress height. Storage beds are a good solution for small bedrooms because they use the space that would otherwise be used by a box spring to add storage to the bedroom.

Box Spring beds for a traditional look
If you are searching for a traditional bed style, a box spring bed is the answer. A traditional bed is designed to be used with both a box spring and a mattress. As opposed to a platform bed, a box spring bed will have a frame that supports the box springs, which in turn support the mattress.
Many traditional bed enthusiasts tell us that there is no comparison to sleeping on box springs and a traditional innerspring mattress. If you are dreaming of you grandparents' feather bed, this might be the right choice for you!
Don't forget the bed skirt! A bed skirt, also known as a valence or dust ruffle, is a key part to the look of a traditional bed. Not only does it add style to your bedroom, but it also hides whatever is hidden under the bed! It may seem like a small detail, but many beds look naked without it! Most platform bed designs will not allow a bed skirt
